Gadofosveset Profile
In Oct 2005, gadofosveset, a novel gadolinium-based contrast agent has been approved by the European Commission in all 25 member states of the EU. Approval was granted for MR angiography in adult patients with suspected or known vascular disease of the abdomen and/or extremities. This includes the following main atherosclerosis-related occlusive diseases in which MRA guides treatment decisions:
- peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD)
- aorto-iliac occlusive disease (AIOD)
- critical limb ischemia (CLI)
- renal artery stenosis (RAS)
In Switzerland, gadofosveset is indicated for contrast-enhanced MRA in patients with suspected or known vascular disease. This also includes MRA of:
- extra-and intracerebral vessels
- pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis
Gadofosveset (trade name Vasovist) is the first blood pool agent available for clinical use.
